Michigan Ross :: Essay #3
What are you most passionate about? (300 word maximum)
Drums are my passion. There’s something about the beat, the rhythm, the music that completely mesmerizes me and makes me lose myself in a world of blissful calm. After a busy tiring frustrating day at work, all I need is a good number with my drums to unwind completely.
I started drumming when I was 16 – out of pure coincidence. My uncle had a set of drums in his home, and I sneaked in to try my hand at it. I really couldn’t get a rhythm going, but my uncle noticed and insisted I had talent. Thanks to his encouragement, I started practicing regularly. Under his guidance my beats improved. True enough, I found a natural rhythm – I did have some natural talent after all! There’s been no looking back since then.
First week of college I signed up for our band – The Straight Fs. We practiced every day after class. We held our first concert in college in two months. It was a big hit among the students. They wanted more. We obliged, holding our second concert two months later. Buoyed by the continued support, we contested in – and finished second – at a contest of bands from across the city. We still play today, although less regularly due to time constraints.
As cliché as it sounds, drumming is my nirvana. The contentment I derive from it is supreme – its effect is transcendental. I want to share this feeling with those around me too and hence hold regular drums lessons for friends. I would love to hold these lessons for my Ross classmates as well. I look at it as a small gesture of giving back to the music that gives me such fulfillment.
